Vernon Wayne Barts, age 86, of Atco, NJ passed away peacefully on September 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 17, 1939 in Durham, North Carolina, Wayne grew up in Philadelphia and later moved to Atco, NJ where he raised his family for over 50 years. He was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and friend.
A veteran of the US Army, Wayne served from 1962 to 1965. He worked for Sun Oil Company retiring after 30 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus council 7463 and of the American Legion Post 311.
Proud coach, baseball umpire and soccer referee to many local organizations, Wayne spent much of his life surrounded by sports. He was an avid, passionate Eagles and Phillies fan. Most of all, he adored watching his children and grandchildren compete in the games he loved.
Wayne was known for his strong family values, his giving nature and his devotion to the Catholic church. Playing cards with his buddies, solving puzzles at the kitchen table and spending time on his computer were the things he enjoyed doing most. Above all, Wayne treasured time spent with family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Patricia Barts (nee Barrett); his children, Lawrence (Sonia), Christopher (Aimee) and Michael (Audrey); his grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Larson, Eric and Jenny and step-grandson Anthony Robbins; his sister, Ramona McClanahan; his extended family, Rosemary and John Murtha; his Army buddy, Salvatore DiMarco; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gurther Southern (nee Barts) and John Milton Presnell; his brother, James McDonie; extended family, Virginia and Thomas McGuigan; and Army buddy, Norman Hendrie.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Wayne's life on Friday, October 9, 2026 at LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral home in Atco, NJ. Wayne was deeply devoted to his faith and to his fellow Veterans, and his commitment to both Christ the Redeemer Parish and American Legion Post #311 was an important part of his life. A donation in lieu of flowers to either organization would be a meaningful way to honor his memory and continue to support the causes and communities that meant so much to him.
