Stephen "Steve" Kirkwood, lovingly known to many as Woody, Wood, and Big Foot, passed away unexpectedly on May 3, 2026, at the age of 66 while undergoing treatment following a recent cancer diagnosis. Though his passing came far too soon, Steve leaves behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, friendship, and love that will forever remain with those who knew him.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Steve grew up in Atco, New Jersey, where he formed lifelong friendships and became a familiar and beloved presence throughout the community. Known for his kind heart, easygoing nature, and larger-than-life personality, Steve was truly a gentle giant. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, never met a stranger, and could effortlessly turn acquaintances into lifelong friends.
Steve attended Paul VI High School and Camden County Vocational School, graduating in 1977. Over the years, he worked many different jobs, always bringing dedication, humor, and personality wherever he went. He served as a building engineer for GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals and later for Philadelphia Performing Arts: A String Theory Charter School. Earlier in life, Steve also worked at the Van House in Atco, served as a Wharton State Forest park ranger, worked as a limousine driver, and was well known as the beloved "floor coordinator" at Now and Then.
Outside of work, Steve found joy in the simple things in life. He loved riding his Harley, spending time at Graziano's, and making memories with his many close friends. Whether sharing stories, laughing over drinks, or simply enjoying the company of the people he loved most, Steve treasured every moment spent with family and friends. His loyalty, warmth, and unmistakable presence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him
Steve is survived by his son, Stephen Kirkwood; his devoted girlfriend and best friend, Denise Amorelli; and his siblings, Edward (Phyllis), Elizabeth, Mary Anne, and James. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward N. and Elizabeth Kirkwood (née Quigg).
Steve will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
