Jyotirmoy Niyogi passed away peacefully on Thursday evening August 21, 2025. He was 91. A devoted husband, father, and friend, he is remembered for his chivalry, wit, and lifelong passion for architecture and the arts.
Born in Dhanbad, India, in 1934 to Bhibuti Bhushan and Renumala Niyogi, he grew up on the campus of the Indian School of Mines, where his father was a professor of chemistry. After studying at Tagore's Santiniketan, he became one of the inaugural graduates of Delhi University's School of Architecture work-study program. He apprenticed with architect Mansingh Rana, who sparked his enduring admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright. He later earned his Master's at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
In 1963, Jyotirmoy married Geeta Chakraverty, who shared his creative sensibility and a 62-year partnership that took them around the world-from New Delhi to to London, England where their only daughter, Shilpi, was born, to Canada, and ultimately the U.S. Settling in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in 1970, he established his career working with small, local firms. Over the decades he designed both residential developments and notable civic projects, including the Atlantic City High School.
Outside of architecture, he was an avid photographer and artist. He shared with his daughter a love of classic Hollywood films, popular culture, and politics.
Jyotirmoy is survived by his wife, Geeta, and daughter, Shilpi. He will be profoundly missed and forever loved.
